This exhibition presents works by members of the Mithila Artist Association responding to Let It Not Be a Girl by the 14th-century Indian poet Vidyapati. The poem reflects on the suffering and social constraints imposed upon women while affirming the possibility of reaching “the far shore of this sea of conflict.” The artists explore and reinterpret its themes of love, vulnerability, resilience and liberation from a contemporary perspective.
The exhibition brings together a range of painters, but it is Archana Mishra and Rekha Das who mark its furthest poles — one drawn to spiritual abstraction, the other to unflinching realism. Archana Mishra approaches the poem through a spiritual and mystical lens, looking past worldly suffering toward inner transformation and transcendence. Rekha Das, by contrast, confronts the immediate realities of women's lives with direct, unflinching imagery. Read side by side, the two artists illuminate a shared undercurrent — where Archana Mishra's soul seeks release from the endless cycle of birth and rebirth, Rekha Das's body seeks release from the constraints of everyday life, and together they suggest that spiritual liberation and worldly freedom are two expressions of the same longing.
