Join us for an Artist Talk with Benedicto Figueroa, including a Q+A with the poet. This talk is moderated by SMUSH Gallery's Co-Artistic Director Katelyn Halpern and followed by the Closing Reception for Are You There? Hosted as part of JC Fridays!
About the Show: When you see the city through Benedicto's eyes, poetry is everywhere: scrolling across bodega signs, leached into anti-drug ads, emblazoned on clothes, and found on every channel, cassette tape, phone line, and text message. With Are You There?, one of Jersey City's most compelling literary artists retrofits decades of accomplishment as a performance poet into the new and equally vibrant media of visual art installation. Are You There? is immersive - a continuous riff on the built environment, saturated with multimedia displays of nostalgia and ephemera and steeped in heartache and memory as only Figueroa can deliver. On view at SMUSH Gallery Nov 4 - Dec 2, 2022.
